October 2004 saw the official launch of Tafseer Imdad-ul-Karam, written by the Principal of Jamia al-Karam Sheikh Pirzada Imdad Hussain. This magnificent piece of work is the first Tafseer ever to be written in the United Kingdom. So far, the first volume is available covering Surah Fatiha to Surah Maida. Two versions have been published, one in Urdu and one in English. The English translation was completed by Ather Hussain al-Azhari, a graduate from Jamia al-Karam, Darul-Uloom Mohammadia Ghousia, Bhera, Pakistan, al-Azhar University, Cairo, and the University of Birmingham. In just over a month, over two thousand copies of the Tafseer have been sold.
The fact that Tafseer Imdad-ul-Karam is the first exegesis to be written in this country is of great significance. What this means is that specifically, Sheikh Pirzada Imdad Hussain has written this work with the western audience in mind. It includes discussions, opinions and themes which directly affect Western Muslims such as womens’ rights, interest, polygamy, slavery, education and so on. Great care has been taken to ensure the work is relevant as possible to the reader.
Equal care has been taken to ensure the opinions of previous commentators of the Qur’ân have been highlighted. Sheikh Pirzada Sahib has used over fifty exegeses as reference, from Tafseer Baidhawi to Tafseer Jalalain. The result is a beautiful mix of new and old and classic and contemporary.
There is little doubt that Tafseer Imdad-ul-Karam will become an indispensable guide to the Qur’ân in years to come. Anyone wanting to develop a serious understanding of the words of Almighty Allah will find Tafseer Imdad-ul-Karam as a useful guide and companion.
Tafseer Imdad-ul-Karam is also a great testimony to the hard work, piety and sincerity of the Principal of Jamia al-Karam, Sheikh Pirzada Muhammad Imdad Hussain Sahib. May Allah increase his knowledge further and enable the Tafseer to be a means of salvation and success, in this world and the hereafter. Ameen.
